Fonts

In my opinion, the second one is not acceptable as font in rock music magazine, because when people see this font design, it can image classic, rich and clever. This is not what the target audience want. The reason why the first one is better is the design is huge, and we image more disorderly than other one.

Flat plans

I started to design the cover of music magazine. From analysis of rock music magazine, the young men who are upper or middle class is the most reader. So my target audience is the teenager boys who are upper and middle classes.


At first, there is a two different covers of magazine. One is the font of title is huge and it gives more impact than another one. Also the subtitle, which is the name of the band and what contents, is vertical writing and use capital letters. People see the camera and I would like to take their face seriously and cool. On the other hand, another one is quite different to first one. The title is wrote in longhand. The photo shot is close to their face and between them, there is a subtitle which is also wrote in longhand. Do you think which cover is suitable?

There is the flat plan of content page.

Two circles of this are the main articles of this magazine. The circle design is particular so that gives more impact and attractive when people see and read it. On the right side, there are small articles and advertisements. The reason why I design these one on the right is English read from left to right, so when people look something, they see the left side first by the mechanism of human biology. So I guess it is the best position to put the main article on left side.

I will explain about the flat plan of the double page on "Planning and evaluation of the article", because it shows more details.

Evaluation~college magazine~

This is the complete cover and contents page of the college magazine.

I think this is not adapt my flat plans because I did not have time to make it and also I did not know how to design further. So I will evaluate what wrong it is and what I have to do to make better.

First, this cover. The photograph is very good but the background is not good, because this is the wall and it is not delightful background. If this cover is delightful and soft, the background is more colorful or white. Likewise, the background of the subtitle is different of my idea, and the letters are not attractive and a glorious design. I had to think what person should wear and what the color of fonts must change. Also I think the title is not unique and it is so small. It is better to design bigger.

Second, this contents page. I think this idea is not bad because this pair of the color is so nice, and the font of "contents" is cool. Also the picture that is off shot is so good.If I am reader of this magazine, the off shot of the model makes me to feel close, because the face of off shot is the real face of that person and reader prefer seeing the picture like this.

Overall. this magazine has a lot of point which were able to be better if i could change. So next magazine, I will think and about target audience whom I should to be wanting to read and buy.

flat plans~college magazine~

This is the flat plan which is the cover of college magazine.

I would like to make the cover that is soft, so it gives kind and delightful to the reader. There are three resources to make interesting.

First, the font is fine but it looks soft, because the title is the most important point that people look and hand this magazine. Needless to say, this font color is also light, like pink, and light blue.

Second, the subtitle, "why don't you study at lewes?". The subtitle shows what contents are and what interesting article is. This subtitle appeal to people the reason, and this way makes people to have interest. Also the background of these letters is yellow and the color the letters without "lewes" is blue and "lewes" is red. The reason why "lewes" is different color and bigger than other letters is this magazine introduce about Lewes Campus of Sussex Downs College. One of the purposes publishing this magazine is to increase people to come to this campus, so if this letters are small and it is not attractive, there is no mean giving interests to people about lewes campus. In addition, this subtitle is designed inclined. This gives more impact to people because this is a particular and this way use few magazines.

Third, on the corner of the left, there are small letters which introduce about the easy test to find subjects that people conform. At first sight, these are so difficult to read but the letters which are important to read can change the colors. For example, the sentence "which subject do you want to study?", and I think "subject" and "study" are important words to read, I can change the font color like this: "which subject do you want to study?" This makes more clear to show what this magazine content.

This is the contents page of this magazine.

I plan that the left side is blue and right side is white. The color of these letters is only black, because this makes simple but it gives impact. Also the main contents, example of this is "interview" and "picture", are write in capital letter, which is noticeable.

The reason why this page design simple is the cover use a lot of colors and that looks gorgeous, so I decided that this page is the exact opposite of the cover.

Because the title design is so unique and also the subtitle, so it is more striking than any other magazines. Also the person who is used this magazine cover is smile, it shows something happy and having fun.

I plan to make the cover of magazine. Then, i took two picture in the same mise en scene, which are different angle, and face of person.

This girl didn't see camera and it is difficult to see her face. She looks smile, but also looks a little sad.
How about this one?

This one, she see and smile toward camera. We can find that she might happy.

I will choose after one, because the girl who was on the picture smile and that bring something positive and brightly. The magazine is about the good point of our college, so the cover has to give to people to becomes wanting to buy or look this magazine.

Target Audience

The list shows the data about what magazines the audience bought from July 2008 to June 2009. And there are different results between Q and NME.

Needless to say, Q is more popular rock magazine than NME. There is a reason why. One is the quality of the paper that are used as pages of magazines, because Q is published each months. In NME, this one is published each week, so the quality is not good because it costs a lot of money to make. Also Q started issue later than NME, so the design is more modern and they also use some technology, I guess. But it is quite similar percentage between two magazines. For example, the percentage of the age of Q readers are as same as NME readers, and young readers read more than people who are over 44 years old.

So I suppose that the profile of one person who are reader of my music magazine. Person is a man and he is teenager and under 25 years old. He always listen to music, and he also play the instrument as the member of the rock band. From secondary school, he prefer listening rock music, so he goes to the love house every weekend to watch performances of another bands, and always contrast what the difference is between his and others. So for him, the music magazines are the most important to learn and know much more about rock.

In conclusion, the target audience is the men who are under 25 years old and also have a enthusiasm of rock and live performance.

Introduction

This task, we explain about magazines through this blog. We research and analyse music magazines which is a development of our skill from the preliminary coursework blog and designing college magazine. I have decided to focus on rock music magazines, Q and NME.

In AS Media class, we make a college magazine and study the structure of magazine. The picture that use at magazine is person's face called a medium close up. We design our own magazines.
